Sun center Brionna Jones has undergone surgery and will miss the remainder of the WNBA season with a ruptured right Achilles tendon, the team announced on Saturday.
Jones suffered the injury through no contact and with just over a minute left in Connecticut’s 85-79 road win over the Storm on Tuesday. She had 13 points, four rebounds, three assists, and a steal before being helped off the court.
The reparative surgery was performed Friday in Seattle, the team said.
‘First, I want to thank everyone who has reached out over the last few days,’ Jones said in a press release.’All of the love I’ve received has truly been a blessing as I’ve gone through this tough time.Â
‘While this is not how I envisioned this season ending for me, I am determined and ready to head into the next stage of recovery and rehab.I know I have an amazing support system behind me, and I will return on the other side of this stronger than ever.Â
Brionna Jones tore her right Achilles tendon without any contact against the Seattle Storm
‘I’m definitely going to miss competing every night with this incredible group of women the most, but I am excited to see this team continue to flourish and accomplish great things this season.’Â
The six-foot-three post, last season’s WNBA Sixth Player of the Year, was averaging 15.9 points and 8.2 rebounds per game for the Sun (11-3) this season.
Jones, who signed a new one-year deal before the start of the season, was also establishing herself as a starter following the departure of Jonquel Jones to the new jersey treatment center York Liberty.
Jones — a center — is expected to miss most of the Sun’s championship contending season
‘We are heartbroken for Breezy,’ Sun coach Stephanie White said.’Anyone who knows her, knows she’s an amazing person, teammate and leader for our group.
‘[…] We will be here for her and lift her up as she goes through the recovery process. As a team, we know we have a job to do, and we will dedicate our work toward the ultimate goal of winning a championship in a way that honors Breezy.’Â
The Sun will most likely have to go small, leaning on Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner.Olivia Nelson-Ododa, 22, is also expected to see her game time increase.Â
The Sun currently hold a 11-3 record through 14 games, so far this team, putting themselves right behind the team to beat: the Las Vegas Aces
